Sailboat - Nantucket Harbor

Nantucket was the epicenter of North America's whaling industry in the mid-1800s when ship after loaded ship passed through this channel on it's way to the refineries and storehouses on the piers of the town's main harbor.  The whaling industry died when silting prevented the ever larger whaling ships from entering the harbor.  The result was a boon for the recreational sailor who today sets sail on an early summer afternoon for a cruise out into the Nantucket Sound.  Here is a boat returning from such a cruise as the sun settles into the horizon. This image truly captures the nautical feeling of the island.
