This is the Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park. This forest supports many species of trees which are constantly in competition for nutrients and most importantly, light. One of the reasons that sequoias become so enormous is they are relatively fire resistant. When forest fires devastate the rest of the forest the remaining ash and increased light create a perfect environment for the sequoia.
